Hotels, Inns & Event Venues

Grounds guests remember and photograph: entrances, patios, lakeside planters and gardens for hotels, inns, B&Bs and venues.

Why it pays

Guests book the view, and they write about it.

For an inn, a B&B or a wedding venue, the grounds are part of what people pay for. Hotels charge more for rooms with garden and park views, and reviews of hotels designed around nature talk about the experience twice as often. Containers that change with the season, gardens that photograph well and planting that stands up to lakefront wind all come back in bookings and reviews.

The research

What the studies found

Where the value comes from

How better planting pays back

  • 01

    Photos that sell the place

Gardens and seasonal displays give guests, couples and your own listings something worth photographing.

  • 02

    Event-ready all season

Plantings timed to peak through wedding and event season, with fresh displays as it changes.

  • 03

    Lakefront that holds up

Plants chosen for wind, sun and lakefront conditions, like our own lakefront planters.

  • 04

    Better reviews

Guests notice the grounds; reviews of nature-focused hotels mention the experience twice as often.

What could planting return for you?

What this assumes

Uplift of 0.25% to 1% of room and event revenue. The one planting-specific figure we found is a 1.25% posted-price premium for garden-view rooms (Human Spaces 2.0, 2017), and it applies only to rooms with that view. We take a quarter of it where only some guests see the grounds, and close to all of it where the grounds are the experience.

Plantings take time to fill in, so the benefit grows: 35% in year 1, 70% in year 2, and 100% in year 3+.

Lawn turned to planting saves $0.03–$0.1 a square foot each year in mowing, watering and fertilizer, once the planting has settled in: 25% in year 1, 50% in year 2, and 100% in year 3+.

An estimate, not a promise. The ranges come from published research on trees, landscaping and green space, scaled down for one property's plantings; your results depend on your site, your customers and how the planting is cared for. Every study is linked on this page.

What we'd plant

Ideas for hotels, inns & event venues

  • Seasonal containers at entrances, porches and decks
  • Ceremony and photo backdrops planted to peak in event season
  • Lakefront planters chosen for wind and sun
  • Cut-flower and herb gardens for tables and kitchens
  • Pollinator gardens guests can walk through
Sarah and her team have helped us both with a landscape design and installation project at a commercial rental property and with residential projects at our house. They are great with response times, organization and they just love all things plants. Really rewarding to work with.

Questions

Common questions from hotels, inns & event venues

Can plantings be timed for our wedding season?

Yes. We choose plants and plan displays so the grounds peak when you book the most events, with a fresh change of containers as the season turns.

Do you plant lakefront properties?

Yes. We choose plants for wind, full sun and the conditions on the water, as in our own lakefront deck planters.

How does a commercial project start?

With a visit to the property, on-site or virtual. We look at sun, soil, drainage, how people arrive and what you want the place to feel like, and then send a plan with clear next steps and a price.
